Wanna see something GROSS?

May 21, 2007

Today is three months after Joel’s surgery to repair his hand after getting it caught in a treadmill.  (Click here for more of the story.) We went to the Dr. today and he gave me the photos he has taken of his work.  Impressive work.  But not for the squeamish.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you.  And I should also warn you that these pics are about 3MB each.

The first picture is Joel’s hand 36 hours after the injury: joels-hand-004.jpg

Here is Joel’s hand while he’s still in surgery two days later, the skin grafts have just been sewn on:  joels-hand-010.jpg

Here is Joel’s hand one week later when they put him out again to remove the bandages:joels-hand-023.jpg

Two weeks after surgery: joels-hand-018.jpg

WOW! That is totally amazing! The regenerative powers of human skin is totally cool! I would have never thought it would have healed like that!

Is the new skin less flexible? Is he gonna have to be doing special exercise to stretch it out (ouch!)

Tell Joel he is so brave! And that I hope it doesn’t hurt much, or drive him crazy with too much itching!

I thought I could handle it… but I bailed after 5 seconds of the first pic. My lovely wife on the other hand – she was ready to tough it out. Wow.

    Egana,

He did a few weeks of hand therapy, but now it’s fine. He’s even playing guitar. No pain or itching. The scarring should continue to fade a little more, but because it’s on his palm side, you don’t notice it much.

Tell Joel, “Don’t worry, chicks dig scars.”
