Job 12:11

February 16, 2007

“Does not the ear test words as the palate tastes food?”

These words, spoken by Job as he rejects the false wisdom of his friends, remind me that there is more to evaluating words than just deciding whether or not they communicate truth.  Words have a taste to them.  Words should not only be true, but “aptly spoken” (Pr 25:11).

Reading Job 12:11 today underlines what I heard yesterday in a lecture by David Powlison.  People tend to react to sins in others either by being a doormat or being a tyrant.  The one is a perversion of love, the other a perversion of truth.  We must choose the third way and speak the truth in love.
